Collecting blue-and-white, celadon and rice-grain porcelain decor
Traditional Chinese ceramic decor relies on three classic glaze families. Blue-and-white porcelain (qinghua) is painted with cobalt oxide beneath a clear glaze so the pattern remains smooth and permanent. Celadon (qingci) uses an iron-bearing glaze fired to a calm jade-green tone, often accented with deliberate crackle lines (kaipian) on incense burners, figurines and Chinese baijiu wine sets. Rice-grain porcelain (linglong) pierces tiny rice-shaped windows into the clay wall and fills them with clear glaze so light glows through the pattern.
To learn how each surface is fired and how to tell them apart, read our guides to underglaze vs. overglaze porcelain, rice-grain (linglong) porcelain, and styling blue-and-white porcelain in small spaces.
Placement, care & gifting
Display plates, celadon figurines, lucky cat coin banks and miniature ceramic vase magnets bring quiet texture to bookshelves, desks and dining tables. Wipe decorative ceramics with a soft dry or slightly damp cloth, and avoid abrasive pads on gold trim or overglaze enamel. Pairing a shelf piece with tea or jewelry?
