Other cities make ceramics. Jingdezhen made a city out of ceramics. The clay, the cobalt routes, the imperial orders, and the surviving workshops sit on top of each other. You can still walk from a wood kiln to a transfer-print factory in one afternoon.

Qingci is not a museum shop. We select pieces that can be used: a morning gaiwan, a rice-grain plate, a flambe cube bracelet. The capital is only interesting if it still produces things people want to live with.
