Ceramic cups are made for daily use, but a little care helps glaze, lids, straws, and decorative details stay beautiful. The goal is not to make the cup precious; it is to use it confidently without shortening its life.
Wash gently, especially around raised details
Use mild detergent and a soft sponge for most glazed ceramic cups. Avoid steel wool, abrasive powders, and rough pads, especially on embossed flowers, painted details, or glossy glaze.
If tea stains build up, soak the cup briefly in warm water before washing. Do not scrape the surface aggressively. Slow cleaning is safer than force.
Separate lids, straws, and silicone parts
Lidded tumblers often have extra parts that trap moisture. Remove the lid, straw, gasket, or silicone ring if the design allows it. Wash each piece separately and let everything dry fully before reassembling.
This matters for desk cups and milk tea cups because residue can hide around small openings. A clean lid keeps the whole cup more pleasant to use.
Avoid sudden temperature shock
Ceramic handles heat well, but sudden changes can stress the material. Do not pour boiling water into an icy cup, move a hot cup directly into cold water, or place porcelain over direct flame.
For hot drinks, warming the cup with a little warm water first is a gentle habit. It is not always necessary, but it is helpful for delicate porcelain or colder rooms.
Be careful with gold trim and special finishes
Gold trim and some decorative finishes may not be microwave safe. Unless the product clearly says microwave safe, do not microwave gold-trimmed teacups or saucers.
Hand washing is usually safer for decorative porcelain. If you use a dishwasher, choose a gentle cycle only when the product instructions allow it.
Store cups where they will not knock together
Cups chip most often when they hit other dishes. Leave a little space on the shelf, avoid stacking delicate teacups, and keep lids or saucers from pressing against raised decoration.
A cup that is easy to reach will be used more often. Store your favorite ceramic cup in a visible place, not hidden so carefully that it never becomes part of your day.
